Medical Transcription
What
is Medical Transcription?
The medical transcriptionist (MT) is a medical language
specialist, transcribing dictation from physicians and other healthcare
professionals and interpreting and editing to create the medical record.
What Do Medical Transcriptionists Do?
Although MTs work in hospitals, doctors' offices, and
transcription services, many work at home. This requires a high degree
of skill. Our MT program gives its graduates much more than the minimum,
preparing them to become certified medical transcriptionists (CMTs).
What Kind of Money Do Medical Transcriptionists Earn?
“Earnings vary considerably according to the area
in which you live. A 1999 study conducted by Hay Management Consultants
revealed entry-level (Level-1) MT wages ranging from $10.00 to $16.00
per hour. A Level-2 MT, who are more experienced and work at a more advanced
level, tend to earn $1-$2 per hour more than that, and Level-3 MTs earn
an additional $1-$2 more.”*

Our Medical Transcription Program
Our medical transcription students learn to use a dictation
machine and then begin the first of five levels of medical language application.
This is "hands-on" learning, requiring the student to produce
medical transcripts of increasing sophistication as he or she advances
through each level.
Meanwhile, the student is receiving instruction in medical terminology,
anatomy and physiology, disease processes, English grammar and punctuation,
business procedures, professional development, keyboarding and word processing,
software programs, and medicolegal issues. Our top-notch faculty includes
graduates of such prestigious institutions as Yale and Dartmouth.
